Despite having to start league play on the road nearly every season, Texas Tech has managed a 9-4 record in Big 12 openers. The Red Raiders kicked off the 2008 Big 12 campaign last season in Manhattan where they easily handled the Kansas State Wildcats 58-28. Tech's last loss in a Big 12 opener came in 2007 when the Red Raiders dropped a 49-45 decision at Oklahoma State. THE SERIES Texas Tech and Texas will be meeting on the gridiron for the 58th time on Saturday evening when the two teams collide at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Red Raiders will take a one-game win streak to Austin as Tech downed the top-ranked Longhorns 39-33 last season in Lubbock. The Longhorns, however, own the all-time series with a 42-15 record and have won the previous five meetings between the two teams in Austin. Tech's last trip to the state capitol resulted in a 59-43 setback to the then 15th-ranked Longhorns. The series against Texas is the third most played in school history, trailing Baylor (67 meetings) and Texas A&M (66 meetings). MAN, THAT'S EARLY The Texas Tech-Texas match-up is typically reserved for late October or early November but that all changed this past spring when the game was moved up to accomodate ABC's national broadcast of the game. Saturday's game will mark the earliest meeting between the two teams since the 1955 season when the game was played on Sept. 17 (the season opener for the Red Raiders that year). NO. 1 LAST YEAR, NO. 2 THIS YEAR The Red Raiders had a daunting task ahead of them last year when the Longhorns came to Lubbock as the nation's top-ranked team. This year things won't get any easier when Tech heads to Austin as they will encounter a Longhorn team that is ranked second in the country in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. In fact, the Red Raiders have faced a Texas team ranked in the top five in the country in five of the last six years. A QUICK LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS The Texas Longhorns came into the season as a favorite among many college football experts to win the Big 12 Conference and secure a spot in the BCS National Championship. Texas is off to a good start so far as they stand at 2-0 heading into this week's game after polishing off Wyoming 41-10 last Saturday in Laramie. The Longhorns opened the season with a 59-20 victory over Louisiana-Monroe at home. - Colt McCoy, a 2008 Heisman Trophy finalist, has thrown for 654 yards and five touchdowns in the first two games of the year. He is 51-of-76 with two interceptions for a quarterback efficiency mark of 155.8.
- Jordan Shipley is the team's leading receiver with 241 yards on 15 catches and has one touchdown.
- Tailback Vondrell McGee is averaging 65.5 yards-per-game and has one touchdown.
- Linebacker Roddrick Muckleroy is the leading tackler with 11 stops, including two for a loss.

POTTS LUCKY SEVEN Junior quarterback Taylor Potts accomplished something against Rice that even his predecessor Graham Harrel was unable to do. Potts became the first Tech quarterback to throw for at least seven TD's in a game since B.J. Symons threw eight against Texas A&M on Oct. 4th, 2003. The junior from Abilene spread the ball around as five different players caught a TD. He finished the night 36-of-57 for 456 yards, all new career highs. Most TD Passes (Single-Game) In Big 12 History BJ Symons (Texas Tech): 8 vs. Texas A&M, Oct. 4, 2003 Taylor Potts (Texas Tech): 7 vs. Rice, Sept. 12, 2009 Dustin Long (Texas A&M): 7 vs. Texas Tech, Oct. 5, 2002 LEONG HAULS IN THREE For Lyle Leong, the touchdowns seems to come in bunches. The junior from Abilene caught three touchdown passes in Tech's win over Rice. The three TD receptions mark just the fourth, fifth and sixth of his career and were the first since last season's game at Kansas State. Against the Wildcats, Leong hauled in three touchdown catches and coming into tonight, those were the only touchdowns of his Texas Tech career. He finished the night with nine catches for 117 yards. DEFENSE COMES UP BIG IN THE SECOND HALF Ruffin McNeil's halftime adjustments showed in the second half against Rice as the Red Raider defense came to life. The defense recorded three sacks and limited the Owls to 154 yards in the second half. Brandon Sharpe recovered the first fumble of his career and the defense snagged an interception (Marlon Williams). The Red Raiders also collected seven tackles for loss in the second half. Overall the defense had six sacks and that marked the first six-sack performance by Tech defense since the 2007 game against Rice. The defense was in the backfield all night as well with 14 tackles for loss and held the Owls to 257 yards of total offense. WILLIAMS STARTS SENIOR YEAR OFF STRONG Senior linebacker Marlon Williams has made his presence known in the first two games of the season. In two games, he has recorded a team-high 16 tackles with five of them going for a loss. He made a key interception in the fourth quarter of the Rice game that led to a Red Raider touchdown. Five of his total tackles have been behind the line and has resulted in a loss of 14 total yards. |
