SAN MARCOS, Texas - There were a record 2,389 people in attendance at Strahan Coliseum to see Texas State (1-3) beat Texas Tech, 3-0, in non-conference volleyball action. But, the final set scores don't indicate how entertained the masses were as both teams battled throughout. There were 38 lead changes and 16 ties throughout the match and the final scores were: 25-23, 26-24 and 25-21.
For Texas Tech (0-3), Amanda Dowdy had 10 kills and three service aces, Barbara Conceicao belted eight (and hit for a .312 average) and had a career-high five block assists, Alexxa Roberts had six and Miara Cave added five (with no errors) and finished with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage. Setter Karlyn Meyers managed 22 assists and teamed with others across the net for four block attempts. Freshman Tory Vaughan, getting the start at the libero position, had 13 digs in the match, many coming during intense rallies which pushed both squads throughout.
Texas State, defending Southland Conference Champions, were led by Jessica Weynand who hit for a .303 average and picked up 14 kills. Setter Brittany Collins finished with 30 assists.
The Red Raiders head to New Orleans for weekend tournament action which begins Friday, Sept. 4, when Tech takes on Southeastern Louisiana looking for that first win in the Trish Knight-era.
