LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball team is midway through its fall season, and throughout the remainder of the semester Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Scott Erzinger (LHP - 6-3, 225 - L/L - RS So./1L - Houston, Texas/Lamar)
Scott Erzinger has been a member of the Texas Tech baseball program for the past two seasons, and the 2010 season was his first season on the field. As a redshirt freshman, Erzinger made 15 appearances with one start on the mound while posting a 0-2 record in 20.1 innings pitched.
He struck out 21 batters and had one of the lowest opponent batting averages on the Red Raider pitching staff as opposing batters hit only .275 against him.
Erzinger made his collegiate debut throwing 1/3 of an inning against Jacksonville State (2/21/10). Later during non-conference play, Erzinger tossed 2.1 innings with three strikeouts against Washington State.
He made his first career start against Gonzaga at Dan Law Field before throwing a career-high 3.1 innings on the road against Oklahoma State where he struck out three and allowed only two base hits. He finished his 2010 season with two strikeouts in a 1.1 inning appearance at the Big 12 Championships in Oklahoma City against Missouri.
"Scott is a great kid who has really improved here," head coach Dan Spencer said. "He is a great student who wanted to come to Texas Tech to be an engineer, and we wanted him here to play baseball. He has gone from pitching at 80-82 mph, to pitching at 87-89 mph. He has learned how to pitch and how to be a power pitcher. He is a guy who we feel will be a big contributor this year."
Erzinger joins junior Ben Flora as the only returning left-handed pitchers on the Red Raiders' pitching staff.
