LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's basketball team once again took part in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® held at the Lubbock Civic Center Saturday morning.
Giving back to the community plays a major role in the Lady Raider basketball program and one way the team does that is by participating annually in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and this year was no different.
The day started off with the Lady Raiders escorting the survivors outside for the parade and then to the stage to warm-up for the race. The Lady Raiders led the participants in stretching for the race and then escorted the survivors to the starting line for the race. The team took part in the 1K walk. Over 8,500 people participated in this year's race, raising over a record-setting $470,000.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure holds several events throughout the year to raise money and awareness in the battle against breast cancer. During its 16-year history, the Komen Lubbock Area Affiliate has raised over $3 million. Up to 75 percent of the net income from the Komen Lubbock Race for the Cure® and other fundraising activities remain in the community to fund breast cancer education and screening programs in its 16 county area. Komen for the Cure - Lubbock Affiliate sends a minimum of 25 percent of its net income to support The Komen for the Cure National Award and Research Grant Program.
The Race for the Cure is not the only time the Lady Raiders take part in the fight against cancer. During the school year, the Lady Raiders also take part in the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Pink ZoneTM, which is an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in the communities. Each summer the Texas Tech women's basketball coaches participate in The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer FundTM 4Kay Golf Classic to help raise money to fight against women's cancers.
Tech's Pink Zone game this season will be against Baylor on Sat., Feb. 19.
The Race for the Cure is part of the Lady Raiders' Community Game Plan, which kicked-off on Friday night when they signed autographs at the Texas Tech soccer match. The team will also attend the South Plains Fair Saturday afternoon where they will hand out posters and schedule cards.
