LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball team is heading toward the end of its fall season, and throughout the remainder of the semester Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Barrett Barnes (OF/INF - 6-1, 195 - R/R - So./1L - Sugarland, Texas/Fort Bend Austin)
Barrett Barnes had a breakthrough freshman season for Tech in 2010. He was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and was a Freshman All-American.
Barnes led the team batting .341 and also posted a team-leading 14 home runs. He became the first freshman in Texas Tech history to lead the team in batting while becoming the first Tech freshman to lead the team in home runs since 1974 (Mike Bewley).
Barnes also tallied 74 base hits, 19 doubles, 53 RBI and was 12-of-15 in stolen bases. He was second in the Big 12 with 71 runs, was fifth in the league with 40 walks and ranked fourth in slugging (.641). Overall, Barnes landed in seven of the Big 12's top-10 offensive statistical categories.
After breaking into the collegiate scene at first base in 2010, Barnes will be making the transition to the outfield where he has seen action in center field during the entire fall season.
"Barrett had a tremendous freshman year," head coach Dan Spencer said. "He learned a new position last year at first base and he is learning another new position this year at center field. He is going to be a very good center fielder. He is very offensive. He does some things that you obviously can't teach. He can run, has quick hands, hits for power, he has the ability to steal a base, he is a very exciting and explosive player, and he is a great kid off the field and a great worker."
Barnes spent this past summer playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Falmouth Commodores. Barnes played in 37 games where he was among team leaders with three home runs, ranked second on the team with 13 extra-base hits and led the team with 24 RBI.
