LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech golfer Nils Floren has been named to the watch list for the Ben Hogan Award, presented by Chesapeake Energy in association with Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The GCAA made the announcement Thursday.
The Hogan Award is the most prestigious award in men's college golf and is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II, or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer.
Floren, the country's No. 12-ranked golfer, is Tech's top player on the season with a 71.4 stroke average. The junior also has the lowest round of the season for the Red Raiders with a 66 at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate. Floren won the Carpet Capital Collegiate in September and placed third in the one of the top collegiate golf tournaments in the country at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in October.
Floren's brother, Oscar, was named to the Hogan Award watch list in 2007. Floren is one of five Big 12 Conference golfers on the list of 25 as Oklahoma State placed four among the award candidates.
The Hogan Award semifinalists will be announced April 14 and three finalists from that group will be named May 11. The finalists will be invited to the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, for the Hogan Award presentation May 24.
Floren and the Red Raiders will defend their title this weekend at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. Tech won the event by 20 strokes last year and was led by individual champion Chris Ward.
