TEMPE, Ariz. - Texas Tech scored six runs on 10 hits and Ashley Brokeshoulder threw a complete-game gem as Tech beat San Diego State, 6-1. With the win Tech improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Aztecs suffer their first defeat and move to 5-1.
Stephanie Drewry, McKenzie Clemmons and Ashley Hamada each had two hits in the game, and Mikey Kenney drilled her third home run of the season to highlight Tech's hitting. But, perhaps it was the play on the base paths that made the difference.
"I thought we ran the bases really well," first-year head coach Shanon Hays said. "I'd like to say I sent Logan, but the truth is I wasn't even watching. Good thing her head was up!"
Drewry, Logan Hall and Raven Richardson each stole bases in the effort, and several Red Raiders advanced in key situations by virtue of the passed ball or throwing miscues. In particular, and with a 1-0 lead, Tech put up five runs in the fifth when Hamada singled, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a sacrifice fielder's choice (Drewry safe at first). Logan Hall singled in Hamada and Tech had Drewry and Hall on base when Emily Bledsoe reached on an error. Everyone scampered up 60 feet on a passed ball, with Drewry scoring. Then, Hall alertly stole home, noticing that the Aztec infield failed to cover home. (Apparently, Coach Hays didn't notice!) Bledsoe scored on yet another passed ball. All that preceded Kenney's home run so the freshman center fielder was only credited with one run batted in, despite the fact that she came up in a bases loaded situation with one out and hit a home run.
Brokeshoulder (1-1) scattered six hits, walked no one and struck out one, on the way to earning her first win.
The Red Raiders return home and will host their first home game on Friday, Feb. 19, when the team plays host to Maine and UMKC in the first of three tournaments in Lubbock.
