ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas Tech improved to 11-1 on the softball season after the Red Raiders used 18 hits (and five Tiger miscues) to score 18 runs and blast Texas Southern, 18-0, in action at UT Arlington. Ashly Jacobs was perfect for three innings, but gave way to her teammate, Hillary Phillips, with a 16-run lead in the bottom of the fourth as the pair combined to no-hit the Tigers.
Jacobs issued a pair of walks and the cold night air started to effect her foot, so head coach Shanon Hays lifted her before she had tossed the requisite number of innings to secure the win. As a result, Phillips picked up her third win of the season. The duo struck out 10 (Jacobs had eight of them) and dished only the two walks to blemish the otherwise perfect effort.
Emily Bledsoe led the Red Raiders offensive barrage with a pair of doubles and a single as the sophomore scored three and knocked in five herself. Leah Legler returned to the starting lineup and was three-for-three with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Bledsoe and Legler also led an early running attack for Tech which included six stolen bases, Bledsoe collecting three swipes herself.
For the Red Raiders, who got a pair of hits each from everyday starters Stephanie Drewry and Mikey Kenney and a double with two runs scored and two RBI from Logan Hall, also were afforded the luxury of playing several newcomers in key spots and got a pair of hits from outfielder Jordan Palmer and hits from Kristen Reeves, Meredith Heath, Danielle Matthews, and two runs scored and another knocked in from Randi Tongate.
The tournament, which has been juggled because of rain in the region and to accommodate team's travel plans, will feature some schedule changes tomorrow, with the possibility that Tech will play only one game against the host school, UTA. That game, which was scheduled for Noon, will be confirmed via the schedule page of this Web site once that is known. The Game Tracker feature will again be active so that fans can follow the bouncing yellow ball.
