Tech Bounces Back in Second Round

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech fired a 1-under 283 in the second round of the UTSA Invitational on Monday afternoon, rallying from a 15-over round earlier in the day. The Red Raiders were tied in sixth place entering the afternoon session and moved into a first-place tie with the tournament's low round.
The Red Raiders are 14-over on the tournament and the team's afternoon round was the only under-par round of the day. Tech is tied with Southeastern Louisiana, the nation's No. 49-ranked team. The two teams lead Tulsa (+15) in third place, No. 41 Baylor (+18) in fourth and Iowa State (+19) in fifth. North Texas (+20), Louisiana-Lafayette (+23), Texas State (+25), No. 50 Wichita State (+26) and Stephen F. Austin (+29) are sixth through 10th.
Sam Houston State (+30), Oklahoma (+34), Texas-San Antonio (+43), Air Force (+45) and Illinois State (+59) round out the field.
Tech, the highest ranked team in the field at No. 11, was bolstered in the afternoon session by Tyler Weworski, who carded a 5-under 66 for the tournament's individual low round on the day. Iowa State's Nate McCoy, who led after the first round, shot the only other round in the 60s with a first-round 69.
Weworski, who is tied in 22nd place, opened the day with an 81 for Texas Tech, but turned in his best round as a Red Raider in the afternoon. The sophomore began the round on the third hole and posted seven birdies to one bogey, before posting a bogey at No. 1 to finish with the 66.
Junior Nils Floren rebounded from a 2-over 73 in the first round with an even-par 71 and is tied in fifth place, two shots off of the lead. Junior Matt Smith carded a pair of 73s and is tied in 12th place along with sophomore teammate Brian Scherer, who entered the second round tied in sixth place. Scherer followed his morning 72 with a 74. Senior Chris Ward improved three strokes in the second round to a 72 and is tied in 22nd place.
Finley Ewing IV, playing as an individual, also is tied in 22nd place with rounds of 72 and 75.
