Texas Tech Pink Zone Game Set for February 21
February 16, 2010 | Women's Basketball
Feb. 16, 2010
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's basketball program will participate in the annual WBCA Pink Zone® initiative during its game against Kansas on Sun., Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
Throughout the WBCA Pink Zone® week, women's basketball teams and supporters across the nation will dedicate one game to raise breast cancer awareness and funding. Teams, fans and arena will be decked out in pink, survivors will be honored at games, referees will blow pink whistles, donations will be collected and much more.
The WBCA Pink Zone® initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, in partnership with The V Foundation. The WBCA strongly encourages any donations collected from the WBCA Pink Zone games to be given to the Fund.
All Texas Tech fans who wear pink will receive a general admission ticket for $5.
During the pregame, there will be a special pink ribbon drop presented by the Saddle Tramps. A silent auction will also take place on the west side of the concourse beginning at 3:30 p.m., that will include autographed items and memorabilia from Texas Tech Athletics coaches and players, as well as local merchants.
The Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle (MSLC) and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund® are teaming up for its own Pink Treadmill Party to raise money which will benefit both organizations. There will be 10 walkers during the game and each will walk for approximately four minutes and secure donations through sponsors. The CYBEX Pink Treadmill will be courtside at the United Spirit Arena with a great view of the court so walkers will not miss any action of the game.
During halftime, there will be a special breast cancer survivor recognition as well as a free throw contest with breast cancer survivors participating. If there is someone who would like to be part of this special halftime recognition, visit the following website:surveys.polldaddy.com/s/05FF6CDE9A062184/.
Fans will also have the opportunity during halftime to make a donation when the Texas Tech Zeta Tau Alpha sorority chapter along with the Susan G. Komen volunteers pass around pink buckets for this special cause. Proceeds for the bucket pass will benefit the local Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Kay Yow/WBC Cancer Fund®.
The Lady Raiders will be wearing official pink Nike warm-up shirts as well as pink breast cancer awareness ribbons and pink shoelaces during the game. The coaching staff will also be wearing pink as part of the awareness. Breast cancer awareness has a special meaning for the Lady Raiders as one player has been touched personally with family members who have been affected, and Kristy Curry, her staff and players are committed to bringing awareness to the sport of women's basketball.
