LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior right-hander Chad Bettis and Baylor junior right-hander Shawn Tolleson have been named the Big 12 Conference Co-Pitchers of the week for their outstanding performances on Opening Day 2010.
Bettis, a product of Lubbock Monterey High School, was spectacular for the Red Raiders in their season opener against Jacksonville State on Friday. He retired the first 13 Gamecock batters he faced and tossed six shutout frames before allowing his only run of the night in the seventh inning. In all, Bettis allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings of work.
Shawn Tolleson got the opening-day start for Baylor and struck out 11 batters in 6.0 innings en route to earning a win against Duke. He allowed three first-inning runs, then held Duke scoreless on just two hits over next the five frames. The junior righty recorded 10 of the final 12 outs by strikeout. Tolleson's 11 K's were the most since he retired 12 at Kansas State on April 13, 2008. This was just the second time he struck out more than seven batters in a game.
The weekly Big 12 pitcher of the week honor is the second for Bettis and his first since April 13.
