LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's participation in the annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone was once again a very successful event.
Tech raised around $50,000 for breast cancer research, with proceeds benefitting the local Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle. The total included a silent auction, pass the buckets, check presentations, the Pink Treadmill Party and the student organization donation challenge.
"We would like to thank Lady Raider nation for their contribution to the Pink Treadmill Party and Pink Zone game," said head coach Kristy Curry. "Your support and dedication to this cause will help our female athletes along with helping us on a local and national level find a cure to breast cancer."
During the night, a silent auction was held, while breast cancer survivors were recognized during halftime. Texas Tech Zeta Tau Alpha members volunteered with halftime activities with Susan G. Komen for the Cure as well passing buckets for donations. A special check presentation took place from United Supermarkets and Covenant Health Systems. It also marked the second night of the Pink Treadmill Party.
"The Pink Zone game is a wonderful way to spread the message of the breast cancer awareness to those on the South Plains," stated Ashley Hamm, Executive Director, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Lubbock Area Affiliate. "We are grateful to Lady Raider basketball for all the work to help us fulfill our mission of a world without breast cancer."
Texas Tech fans were encouraged to wear pink, and the first 500 fans received a special Think Pink, Go Red shirt provided by Covenant Health Systems.
The night could not have been possible without the generosity of Covenant Health Systems, General Mills and United Supermarkets and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Lubbock Area Affiliate for their donations, contributions and time.
