LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior centerfielder Taylor Ashby matched his career high with four RBIs while junior catcher Jeremy Mayo equaled his career mark of three hits to lead Texas Tech to a 12-8 win over Bethune-Cookman in the first game of the 2010 Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field.
Texas Tech improved to 5-0 on the season and to 1-0 in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic while Bethune-Cookman fell to 1-3 on the year and to 0-1 in tournament play.
Bethune-Cookman jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when right fielder Matt Wright drove in the first of his four RBIs on the night with a single to left. Wright's single drove in Juan Perez who reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a fielding error by Tech right fielder Barrett Barnes.
As they did in the first four games of the season, the Red Raiders did some scoring of their own in the first and managed to tie the game at 1-1. Tech loaded the bases in the inning and scratched out a run when sophomore designated hitter Scott LeJeune grounded into a double play.
Tech took its first lead of the night in the bottom of the second when Ashby drove in the first two of his four RBIs on the night with a two-run home run that bounced in the Left Field Lounge. The home run was his first of the season.
The Wildcats came roaring back in the top of the third with a pair of runs that tied the game up at 3-3. Alejandro Sanchez led off the inning with a triple to right-center and Justin Hoyte quickly brought him home in the next at-bat with an RBI single to right. Wright then tied the game with his second RBI of the night with a double to the gap in right.
Tech regained the lead for good in its half of the third by plating three runs on four hits to take a 6-3 advantage. Mayo delivered the big hit for the Red Raiders when he blasted a two-run home run over the wall in deep right-center. The home run was his first of the year.
The Red Raiders built a 10-3 lead with a single run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Ashby picked up his third and fourth RBIs of the night in the sixth when he drove in two runs with a bases loaded, two-out single up the middle.
Junior right-hander Chad Bettis (2-0) earned his second win of the season by holding Bethune-Cookman to six runs (four earned) on eight hits along with four walks and five strikeouts over seven innings. Patrick Goelz took the loss for the Wildcats as he allowed six runs on eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings.
Texas Tech returns to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when the Red Raiders face Washington State in game three of the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. Bethune-Cookman and Washington State begin the day with a noon first pitch.
