LUBBOCK, Texas - Washington State overshadowed a four-run rally by the Red Raiders in the sixth with a three-run outburst of its own in the top of the seventh and held on for a 10-7 win over Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2010 Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field.
The win gave the Cougars a four-game sweep of the Brooks Wallace Classic and they improve to 6-0 overall while Texas Tech wrapped up the tournament with a 2-2 record and stands at 6-2 on the year.
Trailing by five runs in the sixth (7-2), the Red Raiders mounted a furious two-out rally as Tech pulled within one (7-6) thanks to consecutive hits by Garrett Totten, Barrett Barnes, Scott LeJeune and Nick Popescu. Totten drove in the first run of the frame with a two-out RBI double and then Barnes, LeJeune and Popescu followed suit with three consecutive RBI singles to cut the Cougar lead to one.
Washington State, however, answered the Tech rally with one of its own in the seventh as Tech reliever John Neely walked the first two batters of the inning on eight consecutive balls. Tech then went to its bullpen for closer Jay Johnson but Johnson gave up a two-RBI chopper up the middle to Matt Fanelli that ultimately put the game out of reach. The Cougars added another run in the inning on an RBI double by Brett Jacobs.
Tech found itself in a hole early as the Cougars tagged starter Jordan Stern to the tune of six runs on six hits in just 1 2/3 innings and built a 7-1 lead after only two frames. The seven-run outburst by the Cougars was enough to hand the loss to Stern and he fell to 0-1 on the year.
Paris Shewey (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Washington State as he pitch the final two innings allowing just one run on four hits.
The game was called after the eighth inning due to preset travel arrangements by Washington State. The teams agreed prior to the game that no inning would begin after 3 p.m. and the eighth inning ended at 3:02 p.m.
Texas Tech will put the wraps on a nine-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon when the Red Raiders face the Dallas Baptist Patriots at Dan Law Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and right-hander Brandon Petite is scheduled to get the start on the mound for Texas Tech.
