SCOUTING DALLAS BAPTIST
Dallas Baptist will bring a three-game win streak to Dan Law Field on Tuesday as the Patriots swept a weekend series against Western Michigan at Patriot field in Dallas. Dallas Baptist crushed the Broncos 17-4 on Friday and clinched the series with a 13-9 decision on Saturday. A walk-off home by third baseman Tyler Robbins in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader gave the Patriots a 4-3 win and a three-game sweep. The Patriots only setback of the 2010 season was a 7-2 loss at No. 5 Texas last Tuesday.
Shortstop Travis Meiners is the leading hitter for the Patriots with a .480 average and his 12 RBIs on the year is tied with teammate Duncan McAlpine. McAlpine leads the squad with three home runs. On the mound, DBU owns a 4.35 staff earned run average and is led by Ryan Millard (1-0) who has been perfect through 4 1/3 innings of relief. The Patriots are coached by Dan Heefner who is in his third season as head coach.
MAYO NAMED TO JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST
Junior catcher Jeremy Mayo has been named one of 53 preseason candidates for the 2010 Johnny Bench Award which honors the nation's top collegiate catcher and is presented annually by The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. He is one of four catchers from the Big 12 Conference named to the list as he joins Oklahoma State's Kevin David, Texas' Cameron Rupp and Oklahoma's Tyler Ogle.
KENWORTHY ENJOYING HOT START
Senior shortstop Joey Kenworthy is off to a white hot start to his senior season as he is third on the squad with a .385 average and has driven in eight runs. Kenworthy has hit safely in 6-of-8 games this season while ringing up four multiple-hit games. Against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, he drove in a career-high five RBIs and while hitting just the fifth home run of his career and his first of the year.
In each of the last two weekend tournaments, he has been named to the all-tournament team at shortstop and this past weekend he led all Tech hitters with a .500 average.
PETITE TO GET FIRST START
Since Canada defeated the U.S. for the Olympic gold medal in hockey, maybe now is the perfect time for freshman right-hander Brandon Petite (1-0; 12.00 ERA) to get his first career start. Petite, a native of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, has made two relief appearances so far in 2010 but will get his first action as a starter in Tuesday's game against Dallas Baptist. He pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief against Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 27) in his last outing where he gave up one run on two hits. His only other outing came against Jacksonville State on Feb. 21 and he picked up a win after logging 2 1/3 innings of relief.
FIVE PLAYERS NAMED TO BWC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Texas Tech placed five players on the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic All-Tournament team: Jeremy Mayo (catcher), Joey Kenworthy (shortstop), Taylor Ashby (outfield), Scott LeJeune (designated hitter) and Bobby Doran (starting pitcher).
OFFENSE LEADING THE BIG 12
Texas Tech's offense is currently leading the Big 12 Conference with a team batting average of .357. The Red Raiders are averaging 12 hits per-game and 9.6 runs. Tech has scored double digit runs in 4-of-8 games this year and already blasted 10 home runs.
