LUBBOCK, Texas - Tournaments like this are the reason Texas Tech has the 10th-toughest schedule in collegiate golf. The No. 19 Red Raiders join several other top 20 programs at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Friday at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.
Other top 20 teams in the field are (1) Oklahoma State, (4) Texas, (6) Florida, (7) Texas A&M, (12) UCLA, (13) Arizona State, (14) UNLV, (15) USC, (16) Georgia and (20) Georgia Tech. (22) TCU, (28) Tennessee, (43) Arizona and (45) New Mexico round out the field.
The teams will tee off in the 54-hole event Friday at 8 a.m. local time from holes Nos. 1 and 10. The par-72 course plays 7,510 feet. Live scoring of the event can be located throughout the three-day tournament at www.golfstat.com.
Leading the Red Raiders is the nation's No. 10-ranked golfer, Nils Floren. The junior has three top 10 finishes in five tournaments this season and top 20 outings in the other two events. Floren leads Texas Tech with a 71.5 stroke average and has a 376-36 head-to-head record.
Tyler Weworski will play at No. 2 for the Red Raiders and enters the event with a 76.2 stroke average. The sophomore finished in a personal best seventh-place tie in his last outing at the UTSA Invitational. Senior Chris Ward is at No. 3 and is second on the team with a 72.9 stroke average. He finished tied in 16th place at the UTSA Invitational and opened the spring season with a tie in 21st place in Hawaii.
Finley Ewing IV and Matt Smith round out the lineup at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Ewing is averaging 73.9 strokes in three tournaments on the year, and finished tied in 11th place at UTSA earlier this spring. Smith tied in 22nd place in San Antonio and is averaging 74.0 strokes per round.
On the season, the Red Raiders have played in five events, finishing among the top 10 in each and posting top five finishes in four. The team won the UTSA Invitational for the second year in a row in early February.
