LuBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech got a pair of home runs from Mikey Kenney in game one (4 RBI) and then another in game two (3 RBI) as offensive highlights as the third of three mini tournaments got underway at Rocky Johnson Field. The Red Raiders beat Jackson State, 12-1, in game one and then beat North Carolina Central, 24-1, in game two and improved to 21-2 on the season.
Ashly Jacobs (7-0) and Hillary Phillips combined for a no-hitter in the first game, shortened to five innings, while Ashley Brokeshoulder (3-1) went the distance collecting the win in a mercy-rule game to celebrate her birthday.
For Tech, game one's blasts by Kenney were somewhat remarkable, as the first, in her first at bat, drilled the light pole in left center field two thirds the way up and bounced back into the field of play. In her next at bat, she belted the ball an estimated 260 feet beyond the second fence and into ongoing construction areas east of the ball park. Her third at bat of the day, in game two, she recorded a single to right in the second inning and then, in her final at bat--also in the second frame--she lined the ball over the fence in left center field. She finished with a perfect 4-for-4 line with three home runs, seven runs batted in and four runs scored.
Stephanie Drewry and Raven Richardson also collected a pair of hits, Richardson with two in each game, and Drewry notching a double and a triple in game one while Logan Hall (four runs batted in) continued her parade of doubles (she now leads the team with 10) collecting two on the day, one each per game. McKenzie Clemmons had three hits between the two games, Meredith Heath collected a pair of hits and RBI and Jordan Palmer was 2-for-3 with a run scored and another knocked in against North Carolina Central. Desiree Harvey singled, scored a run and drove in two more in her first trips to the plate this season. Jennifer Lee, who has been rehabilitating an injury, made her first appearance in the 2010 season and went 1-for-1 with a run scored and collected an RBI.
Also adding to the offensive columns in game two, which was a Tech single-game record for runs scored, were Danielle Matthews (1-for-3 with two runs scored), Kristen Reeves (1-for-3 with a run scored and another batted in), Gentsch, who tripled and finished with 4 RBI, Randi Tongate (1-for-1 with two runs scored and two knocked in) and Karli Merlich, who made a couple of pinch hit appearances but did not pitch on the day. Merlich singled in a run in game two.
Games continue tomorrow as the three teams play at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with Tech competing in the two later games. Please note that in tournament play, games begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the preceding games, so start times may be early or late.
