Smith Two Shots Off Lead at Southern Highlands

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Matt Smith (Canberra, Australia) fired a 2-under 70 in the opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters and is two shots off the lead heading into Saturday's second round. Smith carded five birdies on the day for the No. 16 Red Raiders, who finished the round in 13th place.
Smith began his round on No. 10 and closed his first nine at 1-under. He moved to 3-under with birdies on holes 1 and 3 and added another birdie at No. 5, but bogeys at Nos. 4 and 7 dropped him back to 2-under.
Senior Chris Ward (McKinney, Texas) carded a 3-over 75 and sits in a 25th-place tie and junior Nils Floren (Ljungskile, Sweden), the nation's No. 6-ranked golfer, struggled with a 6-over 78. Sophomore Tyler Weworski (Carlsbad, Calif.) and freshman Finley Ewing IV (Dallas, Texas) were 9- and 10-over, respectively, and are tied in 68th and 73rd places.
(4) Florida leads the event after firing a 4-over 292 and is followed by (12) UCLA, (8) Texas A&M, (19) UNLV and (18) USC in the top five and all within four stroke of the Gators. (3) Texas, (13) Georgia and (15) Georgia Tech are sixth through eighth, while (1) Oklahoma State, (27) Tennessee and (29) TCU are tied in ninth place. (50) Arizona is 12th, followed by (16) Texas Tech, (10) Arizona State and (45) New Mexico.
