Distance Medley Relay Interview
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Lady Raiders and No. 6 Red Raiders had a good start to the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships in front of a crowd of 3,233 at the Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., as Tech earned All-America status in the men's long jump and women's distance medley relay.
Freshman Bryce Lamb earned his first All-American honor in the men's long jump. The Big 12 Champion jumped 7.85M (25'-9.25") on his fifth jump of the competition to place fifth. He becomes the third Red Raider to earn All-America status in the long jump the other two being Thomas Selmon in 1982 and Tony Walton in 1992.
"It feels pretty good (to be an All-American), fifth place is not something I'm use to or like but it's All American," Lamb said after the long jump. "Tomorrow I'll look for a better spot in the triple jump. "
The distance medley relay of Purity Biwott, Trudeann Clarke, Gladys Kipsang and Caroline Karunde set a school-record time of 11:09.53 and earned Tech's first All-America honor in the women's distance medley relay. It is the first time Tech has qualified a distance medley relay and the group has the two fastest times in the event in school history.
"It feels good (to be All-American) since we ran as a team and it was a great team effort to earn All-American," Kipsang said after the race on being an All-American.
Texas Tech opened the NCAA Indoor Championships in the women's mile as Karunde qualified for the finals. Her time of 4:44.45 is the ninth fastest. Biwott ran in the finished in 14th in the prelims with a 4:50.12 and didn't advance to the final.
All-American Omo Osaghae has the opportunity to compete in the final of the 60M hurdles for the second-straight year. The senior has the fourth-fastest time at 7.66 and was the runner-up in this event one year ago. Teammate Jansen Hyde ran a 7.82 and placed 11th but did not advance.
Senior Brian Porter cleared 5.25M (17'-2.75") to place tied for 11th in the pole vault.
The women's team is currently tied for 21st place with four points and the men's squad is tied for 23rd with four points as well.
Tech will begin the second day of the NCAA Indoor Championships at 11:30 a.m. with the pentathlon.
