LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Softball (23-2) won a pair of mercy-rule shortened games this afternoon with a 14-0 win over North Carolina Central and an 8-0 win over Jackson State.
Hillary Phillips (4-0) and Ashly Jacobs combined for a one-hitter in the first game and then Karli Merlich tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap to record her eighth victory of the year. Phillips fanned five, Jacobs confounded three and Merlich struck out four on the afternoon.
Offensively, Tech had several players with multi-hit games in both contests, as Raven Richardson and Ashley Hamada led the way in game one each with a pair of hits and three RBI and Mikey Kenney continued to swing the hot bat with a pair of hits, and two runs batted in. Logan Hall, Kenney, Richardson and Hamada each doubled in game one.
Game two saw Hamada go three-for-three with a double and a pair of runs scored as the sophomore outfielder finished perfect on the day (5-for-5, three runs scored and four RBI) and was clearly the day's offensive star for Texas Tech. McKenzie Clemmons had two hits versus Jackson State and Holley Gentsch delivered a two-run double to highlight the effort in the day's final game.
The Red Raiders will square off with both teams again in the morning, after everyone has advanced their clocks an hour this evening, with games scheduled at 10 a.m. and Noon.
