Men's Golf Claims Fifth Place in Vegas

LUBBOCK, Texas - When the polls come out this week, Texas Tech should see an improvement in its current national ranking of No. 16, after finishing fifth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas. The Red Raiders claimed head-to-head wins against six teams ranked higher in the polls, including No. 1 Oklahoma State.
Behind the third-lowest round of the day, the Red Raiders broke a fifth-place tie entering today's round and claimed the spot outright over (10) Arizona State. Tournament-host (19) UNLV and (12) UCLA shared team honors as both tied at 35-over for the tournament. The Bruins turned in the low round of the day with a 299 to claim a share. (18) Southern California and (8) Texas A&M tied in third place and finished three strokes ahead of the Red Raiders. (10) Arizona State, (3) Texas and (29) TCU finished seventh through ninth and (15) Georgia Tech and (27) Tennessee tied in ninth place.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State couldn't overcome the third-highest team score in the second round and finished in 11th place, followed by (45) New Mexico, (13) Georgia, (4) Florida and (50) Arizona.
Senior Chris Ward (McKinney, Texas) finished among the top 20 ina a 16th-place tie with an 11-over 227. Juniors Matt Smith (Canberra, Australia) and Nils Floren (Ljungskile, Sweden) each carded 13-over 229s and tied just outside the top 20 at 21st. Freshman Finley Ewing IV (Dallas, Texas) tied in 43rd place with a 20-over 236, while sophomore Tyler Weworski (Carlsbad, Calif.) shot a 22-over 238 and tied in 53rd place.
The Red Raiders won't get much of a break as the team heads to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the National Invitational Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday. Three days later, Tech will play in the Callaway Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz., March 21-23.
