LUBBOCK, Texas - Ashly Jacobs (9-0) was one hit from throwing a perfect game as Texas Tech improves to 25-2 on the season with an 11-0 win in five innings over North Carolina Central and an 11-2 win over Jackson State in six innings as play at their final mini-tournament concluded today.
Jacobs went the distance in the first game of the day and faced one over the minimum batters as Shakemia Edwards spoiled her otherwise perfect outing with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Jennifer Lee led the offensive highlights as the junior designated player was a perfect three for three with two doubles and two runs driven in. Raven Richardson also smacked a double as eight players tallied hits with only Lee having a multiple hit game.
Ashley Brokeshoulder (4-1) recorded the win in the final game with Jackson State as the freshman allowed only one hit and struck out five through three complete, the minimum required for the pitcher since the team eventually won in mercy-rule fashion (and she was ahead be that margin when she left the game). Karli Merlich threw the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Emily Bledsoe had three hits, including a pair of doubles, three runs scored and another two runs driven in and Logan Hall had two hits, including a double, to lead the way for the Red Raiders offensively. But, it was Mikey Kenney's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth that pushed the score over the eight-run (after five innings) minimum required for a complete game, that sent the crowd home celebrating a perfect 6-0 home weekend for Tech.
Texas Tech now has 18 wins at home, the most ever tallied in Lubbock, and will return to action on Tuesday when the Red Raiders host Texas State for a double header beginning at noon.
