MIDLAND, Texas - Brandon Petite gave up five runs in the first inning and Texas Tech stranded seven runners as New Mexico State held off the Red Raiders for a 6-2 win at Citibank Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Tech (12-15) lost its third consecutive game after dropping two to No. 8 Texas over the weekend at Dan Law Field.
Tech could not get much going despite five runners reaching base over the first five innings. The Red Raiders finally got on the board in the bottom half of the third inning when shortstop Joey Kenworthy singled in third baseman Nick Popescu on a shot to right-center field but Kenworthy was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
The middle of the Tech lineup struggled against New Mexico State right-hander Thomas Brendel (2-1) as Barrett Barnes, Scott LeJeune and Jeremy Mayo finished the night a combined 1-for-11 (.090).
The Red Raiders return to the Law on Thursday night to take on No. 20 Kansas State (19-3, 3-0), who sits in first place in the Big 12 Conference as of Tuesday night.
