HOUSTON, Texas - Houston pounded out 10 runs on hits in the second inning and went on to dispose of Texas Tech 15-8 on Sunday afternoon in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
The loss gives Texas Tech a three-game losing skid as the Red Raiders fall to 7-5 on the season. Houston completes a three-game sweep of the classic and improves to 5-5.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Tech starter Louis Head walked the bases loaded with two outs and M.P. Cokinos drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single to right-center. A fielding error by Head led to the third and final run of the inning.
The Red Raiders answered the Houston scoring in their half of the second when Tech loaded the bases with two outs and Michael Reed drove a two-run double down the right field line. Reed, who had his eight-game hit streak snapped last night against Rice, leads the team with six doubles this season.
The game turned sour for Tech in the bottom of the second as Houston pounded out 10 runs on 10 hits and two Tech errors to take a 13-2 lead. At one point, the Cougars had eight consecutive base hits.
Texas Tech returns home this week for a two-game midweek homestand against Gonzaga. The Red Raiders and Zags will play a 6:30 p.m. game on Tuesday night and conclude the series with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday.
