LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raiders (30-8) fell to Nebraska (22-17) as the Huskers broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh with two runs and then hung on to win, 3-1.
Tech, which got a strong enough performance from senior pitcher Ashly Jacobs (11-4) to win, struggled mightily at the plate as only senior Leah Legler could manage a hit. The Red Raiders plated their only run in the third when Ashley Hamada drew a walk off starter, Robin Mackin, and Legler drove a ball up the middle to score Hamada from second after she had swiped it.
Brooke Thomason greeted Jacobs with two outs in the sixth and lofted a ball over the fence in left center for her seventh home run to even the score. In the seventh, Jacobs allowed a hit to reliever Ashley Hagemann (11-8) to start the inning. She was lifted in favor of Ashley Brokeshoulder who allowed a single to Alex Hupp. A pinch-hit single loaded the bases with no one out. Brokeshoulder induced the top of the Huskers' order into two outs, strike out and fly ball, but catcher Ashley Guile stroked a single which scored two runners, including Mackin who had returned to the game at second to run for Hagemann.
The Red Raiders did get a base runner on in the seventh -- Legler with two outs -- but the squad was unable to capitalize. The Huskers outhit Tech, 7-1, on the afternoon as the Red Raiders continued a recent pattern of not capitalizing on scoring opportunities, stranding seven.
The Huskers improve to 2-3 in Big 12 play, while Tech falls to 2-4 in conference action.
The two teams finish their season series tomorrow at Noon at Rocky Johnson Field.
