LUBBOCK, Texas - Blair Luna went the distance and picked up her 25th win on the season as No. 12 Texas beat Texas Tech, 7-2, in front of 729 fans. With the win the Longhorns expand their lead in the Big 12 with a 38-10, 11-2 record, while Tech hangs on to sixth place by a bare margin at 35-13, 7-9.
Brittany Chalk and Courtney Craig hit back to back home runs in the third inning off Tech starter, Ashly Jacobs (13-6), and, while it was a blustery day on the Caprock, neither long ball could be considered "wind aided."
Tech mounted a bit of a threat in the bottom of the fourth when Logan Hall hit her fifth home run of the season to post a pair of runs in the frame. Raven Richardson and pinch hitter Jennifer Lee collected Tech's other hits on the evening.
Luna (25-6) scattered three hits and two walks around five strike outs to earn the complete-game win.
Karli Merlich came on in relief for the Red Raiders and threw five innings, allowing six hits and three runs, but only one was earned.
Neither team was particularly sharp on defense as Texas committed three miscues and Tech erred on four opportunities.
Tech hosts No. 20 Texas A&M for a weekend series Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon. There will be a senior day celebration for Tech's Ashly Jacobs, Leah Legler and Danielle Matthews, who each will be graduating later this year.
