LUBBOCK, Texas - Running back Harrison Jeffers rushed for 139 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns in Texas Tech's scrimmage Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. The sophomore also grabbed four receptions for 37 yards.
Despite a slow start in the team's first scrimmage two weeks ago, Jeffers took over the running game Saturday, scoring twice on runs of 40 and 29 yards. Junior Aaron Crawford rushed 15 times for 68 yards.
GETTING TIME UNDER CENTER: Saturday's workout was the first full scrimmage for backup quarterbacks Seth Doege and Jacob Karam. Working some under center for the first time this spring, the two combined for 485 yards and 10 touchdowns. Doege led the way with 301 yards on 29-of-52 passing, while Karam added 184 yards on 11 completions.
BIG DAY IN THE MIDDLE: Senior linebacker Bront Bird paced the defense with 10 tackles on the day from his new position on the inside. Bird made the move early in spring workouts, switching with Brian Duncan, who moved to the outside.
STOPPING SHORT: Sophomore defensive back D.J. Johnson stopped an offensive drive at the goal line with an interception late in the scrimmage.
PARTIAL VIEW: The defense took advantage of two closed workouts last week to install some new facets of the scheme, which wasn't shared Saturday with those in attendance. The staff held back on its play book during the scrimmage and will publicly unveil the entire package when the team takes the field in the fall.
STICKY FINGERS: Sophomore wide receiver Alex Torres dropped an early pass Saturday, but made those in attendance forget about it as he proceeded to catch everything thrown his way. Torres finished the scrimmage with eight receptions for 116 yards and four touchdowns.
