LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech put the finishing touches on spring drills with the annual Spring Game on Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. Despite cool temperatures and overcast skies, Red Raider fans didn't disappoint and showed up to get a glimpse of the team under first-year head coach Tommy Tuberville.
"I want to thank the fans for coming out today," Tuberville said. "Our players have been through a lot the last six months and it was good to see the fans come out and support them. The players worked hard during the spring and it was special for them to see the turnout."
The Red Raiders didn't disappoint the fans, either. Offensively, redshirt freshman Jacob Karam and sophomore Seth Doege, filling in for quarterbacks Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield, combined for 47-of-68 passing, 530 yards and five touchdowns. Karam completed 23-of-34 for 326 yards and three touchdowns, including a 64-yard scoring strike to Cornelius Douglas in the second quarter. Doege tossed two touchdown passes and finished with 204 passing yards.
Alexander Torres led the receivers with 10 receptions for 115 yards. The sophomore also caught a touchdown pass from Karam. Douglas finished the game with 106 yards on five receptions and a score, while Detron Lewis, Eric Ward and Austin Zouzalik each added touchdowns.
On the ground, Tech ran the ball 62 times for 137 yards and an Aaron Crawford touchdown. Harrison Jeffers led the group with 68 yards on 19 carries, while Crawford tallied 40 yards on 12 rushes. Baron Batch had six rushes for 38 yards.
The defense accounted for five sacks and 17 tackles for loss, as Tech unveiled its new 3-4 defense. Redshirt freshman Kerry Hyder registered two sacks and three tackles for loss from his end position, while linebacker Brian Duncan, who recently moved to the outside, had two tackles for loss. Walk-on defensive back Eugene Neboh led the defense with eight tackles.
Defensive back Yashua Williams grabbed the team's lone interception, while defensive back Daniel Cobb and linebacker Tyrone Sonier each recovered a fumble. Cobb also forced a fumble as did defensive back LaRon Moore.
