LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech golfer Tyler Weworski finished in a third-place tie at The Aggie Invitational on Sunday to record his best collegiate finish and lead the No. 14 Red Raiders to a third-place showing against a talented field.
"I like the way we're playing right now," Tech Head Coach Greg Sands said. "We got a lot of contribution from our entire lineup this week and we've been playing well the last two weeks. A few shots slipped away from us today, but Oklahoma State made a push on the back nine and were able to overtake us."
Weworski carded rounds of 2-, 3- and 1-under to finish among the top three. Following a double bogey on the first hole, Weworski settled into the round, posting three birdies on the front nine. He countered a bogey at No. 11 with a birdie two holes later to shoot a 71.
Junior Matt Smith also finished among the top 10 in an eighth-place tie after firing a 5-under 67 Sunday. He began the day tied for 22nd after carding rounds of 72 and 73 in the first two rounds. Junior Nils Floren, ranked No. 8 nationally, followed Saturday's opening-round 73 with a 70 in the second and a 71 Sunday. He finished tied in 15th place. Senior Chris Ward shot his second-straight 73 in the final round and tied in 26th place, while sophomore Brian Scherer and freshman Finley Ewing IV tied in 34th and 54th places, respectively.
Tournament host and No. 6 Texas A&M dominated on its home course, shooting 38-under for the event, and 21 shots better than No. 1 Oklahoma State in second place. The Red Raiders finished four shots behind the Cowboys, whom they led heading into the back nine. Tech and OSU faced off in a two-team battle for second as the two teams, along with the Aggies, were the only teams to shoot under par for the tournament. OSU was 17-under, while Tech shot 13-under.
No. 30 San Diego State finished fourth at 7-over, while No. 7 Texas was fifth (+12). Baylor (+15), No. 43 New Mexico (+16), No. 42 SMU (+20) and No. 47 Kent State (+25) finished fourth through 10th. Colorado (+30) and UTSA (+53) rounded out the field.
The Red Raiders now turn their focus toward the Big 12 Championships next week at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, where Tech will once again battle traditional conference powers Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas. The teams have competed against each other in the last two tournaments, with Tech and A&M posted top five finishes in each. The quartet also represents the Big 12 Conference's presence among the top 25.
"Our guys have been playing competitive golf this spring, especially the last two weeks," Sands added. "The Big 12 Championship is up for grabs this year and I feel like if we continue to play well and make a few extra putts, we have as good a shot as anyone to win. I've been proud of our effort and concentration and look for it to continue next week."
The Big 12 Conference Championships get underway April 23-25.
