Texas Tech Head Coach Dan Spencer
On tonight's non-conference win over Alabama A&M:
"It was a good night. I thought our guys did a good job of staying and getting right in it. After the first hitter, Ben (Flora) threw a lot of strikes. Our guys did a good job. We hit a lot of line drives. We hit some balls hard and swung at strikes and kind of took care of the game early. We played with some enthusiasm. I think they understand that Alabama A&M is standing in the middle of where they want to go and we need to do that. We need to be professional and take care of business. They're an athletic bunch. When they get on the bases and start running, they're dangerous. The kid that was in right field and moved to center, he's a big league guy as far as arm and going to get the ball. They have some good-looking bodies. We need to respect them and take care of our business again tomorrow."
On concerns coming into this midweek series after the big Oklahoma series win this weekend:
"I wasn't as concerned about a letdown as I was concerned about getting beat. I feel like our guys understand what's at stake for us and needing to play well. But sometimes that's not enough and you get beat. So, I'm more concerned now about tomorrow because we played them now once and we had a big win so now they think it's going to be easy and that's not the case. We reminded them of that. I like to think we'll come out and throw strikes and get after them."
On starting pitcher Ben Flora's performance tonight:
"He was real good. He was efficient. He threw a lot of strikes. He threw less than 50 pitches so he should be fine for the weekend."
Catcher Jeremy Mayo
On the nine-run second inning:
"They were walking us quite a bit so we just took advantage of that. When they throw the ball away, you have to take an extra base. So that was pretty much it."
On using this game to relax some before another Big 12 Conference series this weekend:
"It's kind of nice to just roll out and have 16 hits and run somebody into the ground. We have to come out and beat them again tomorrow."
On the focus needed in this series to keep going where the team wants:
"We're trying to do big things. We just have to keep hitting the ball and fielding it and keep pitching it so that hopefully we can get where we want to go."
On the importance of staying focused for tomorrow's series finale:
"We're going to keep the same approach as we do facing anybody, whether it's Texas or Alabama A&M. You just have to get out there and get your pitch to hit, swing the bats well."
Pitcher Ben Flora
On his performance tonight:
"It felt good. It's the second time I've done it. I just tried to focus up because it was kind of hard with those long innings and staying mentally focused and I think I showed that at times with the balk and the first four-pitch walk, which was exactly what (Coach) Spencer told me NOT to do. But overall, I felt like I was throwing it pretty good."
On the difficulty pitching against a team like Alabama A&M:
I think it is (difficult) if you make it hard. Like I said, I wasn't perfect at staying completely focused but long innings can get you. You just have to do your best to stay locked in and stay encouraging to the guys that are hitting and stay focused."
