LUBBOCK, Texas - The white squad unloaded four first-half goals, while withstanding a second-half rally by the red team to win Texas Tech's Red-White match, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Besides the action on the field, the match also benefited the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas as the soccer program and Tech's Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter joined forces for the benefit match.
The white squad was led primarily off the attack of Sarah Ellison and Taylor Lytle. Ellison nailed two first-half goals, while Lytle added a goal of her own and an assist to build a 4-0 halftime lead.
The red team responded in the second half with two goals of their own from Tiffini Smith and Casey McCall, but it was not enough as goalkeeper Colleen Pitts and the white back line stifled the red attack.
Jaclyn Dozier put the match away for the white squad with her second goal of the day that pushed the lead to 5-2 with only two minutes to play. The red squad had their chances throughout the second half, but several shot attempts either bounced off the crossbar or were collected in goal by Pitts.
"This is obviously a great way to benefit such a great cause," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "After a long spring, this was a nice way to wind down and allow the team to have fun in an 8-against-8 format. The SAE's were great, and this is something we want to continue for years to come."
The match concludes the spring for the Red Raiders as they finished the exhibition schedule 4-0-1 overall. Tech opens the 2010 regular season at home against TCU on Aug. 20.
