WACO, Texas - Despite a brilliant pitching effort by Ashly Jacobs (11-2) the Red Raiders can't capitalize and lose a heart-breaker to No. 24 Baylor, 1-0, in the bottom of the ninth.
Jacobs, who has now pitched 21 2/3 consecutive innings of softball without allowing an earned run, scattered five hits, two walks and struck out three through 8.2 innings of work. The senior right-hander worked out of a jam in the first and second then cruised, allowing only a meaningless single and a walk until the bottom of the ninth when, with two outs, Dani Leal drew a walk. Jordan Vannatta singled and Leal came around to score on an error by center fielder Mikey Kenney.
Jennifer Lee led Tech at the plate going two for two as the starting designated player. The Red Raiders out-hit the Bears, six to five, as Stephanie Drewry, Emily Bledsoe, Kenney and Ashley Hamada each collected hits on the afternoon. The Red Raiders stranded eight base runners.
Baylor's freshman pitcher, Courtney Repka, went the distance and picked up her 14th win (against six losses) in the complete-game shut out. She walked a pair of batters and struck out seven Red Raiders.
The teams will take the Easter holiday off and will resume action with a 5 p.m. game on Monday. (Please note adjusted time.)
