LUBBOCK, Texas - Chris Ward carded an even-par 71 and followed with 72 on the first day of the 54-hole Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, and is one shot off of the lead in third place. With one round to play the Red Raiders sit in third place and trail tournament leader and host (7) Texas by seven strokes.
Ward was nearly flawless in the opening round Monday morning, erasing a pair of bogeys with birdies en route to a 71. He saved his even round on the final hole with birdie. Ward birdied twice in the afternoon round, but posted one more bogey for a 1-over 72.
Nils Floren and Matt Smith are tied in 11th and 14th places, respectively. Floren shot even par in the opening round, but struggled with a 75 in the second. Smith turned in rounds of 72 and 75. Brian Scherer and Tyler Weworski are tied in 52nd place. Scherer followed his morning-round 73 with an 80, while Weworski carded rounds of 76 and 77. Playing unattached, Finley Ewing IV is tied in 32nd place after firing a 72 in the afternoon.
(7) Texas leads the event at 11-over, one stroke ahead of (52) New Mexico in second place. (21) Tech is seven shots behind the leader in third and four shots ahead of fourth-place LSU. (5) Texas A&M is fifth, followed by (43) Arkansas, (16) TCU, (19) Georgia, (32) Pepperdine and (72) Tulsa. Top-ranked Oklahoma State is 11th, (36) SMU is 12th, while (71) Kansas State, (51) Baylor and UTSA round out the field.
