Floren, Ward Lead Tech Golf in Austin

LUBBOCK, Texas - Nils Floren (Ljungskile, Sweden) and Chris Ward (McKinney, Texas) put the Red Raiders on their backs Tuesday and carried the team to a fourth-place finish at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin. Floren tied in second place, while Ward finished fourth.
Floren, the No. 23 ranked golfer nationally, fired his second even-par round of the tournament with a 71 Tuesday to match his opening round total from Monday. Floren sat at 1-under down the stretch, but suffered a double bogey at No. 15 and a bogey at 18 with a birdie sandwiched in between for his final tally. Ward, despite shooting a 4-over 75 Tuesday, managed his best finish of the season.
Matt Smith (Canberra, Australia) entered the final round tied in 14th place, but struggles on the final day placed him tied in 37th place. Smith posted a pair of three-hole stretches at 4-over on holes two through four and 5-over on holes 15 through 17. Tyler Weworski (Carlsbad, Calif.) matched Ward with the second-best round of the day for the Red Raiders as the sophomore finished tied in 44th place. Sophomore Brian Scherer (Midland, Texas) tied in 51st place, following a final round 77. Finley Ewing (Dallas, Texas), playing unattached finished in a 32nd-place tie.
(20) Georgia shot even par in the final round to surge atop the leaderboard and claim the team title by a stroke over tournament host (7) Texas. (5) Texas A&M finished four shots behind the `Horns in third place, and a stroke ahead of the No. 19 Red Raiders. (36) Arkansas was fifth, followed by (47) New Mexico, (24) TCU, Tulsa, (1) Oklahoma State and (34) Pepperdine in the top 10, respectively. (23) LSU, (40) SMU, Kansas State, (50) Baylor and UTSA round out the field.
The Red Raiders continue their season April 17-18 at The Aggie Invitational.
