LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's basketball team volunteered its time to participate in a fundraising contest with Murfee Elementary as part of its community service for the city of Lubbock.
In the spring of 2010, a contest was kicked off to see which grade at Murfee Elementary could collect the most Box Tops for Education per student. Box Tops for Education is a nationwide program in which students can clip Box Tops from General Mills and other products. For each Box Top collected, the child's school receives 10 cents. This money can be utilized by the school to purchase equipment and supplies for education.
Murfee held a contest entitled "Runnin' With the Raiders" with its students. After the Box Tops were counted, the second graders at Murfee were the winners of the contest. The Lady Raiders went to Murfee and spent an hour of their time playing games, visiting, signing autographs and playing a little basketball with the winners.
