Texas Tech Head Coach Dan Spencer
On the day repeating previous weekends for Tech losing first game, winning the second one:
"Ya, and Baylor is a tough matchup for us they really are because they pitch. They really pitch, so the recipe of getting deep and scoring a whole bunch of runs and execute. Bobby (Doran) did his part. He went out today, and Chad (Bettis) did his part and he was great. They make the runs hard to get, so we're going to have to win games 5-3 or like that, and that's a little bit out of our formula. With the weather like it was today, it was a good day, but the yard is playing big for both clubs. Bobby Doran answered the bell again, and Chad pulled behind him and did his thing."
On whether the team came out different after the 12-day break:
"I don't think so. Their guy just kind of stuffed us. We had some guys have really tough days, but Barrett's (Barnes) giving a lot of clubs tough days, so I attribute more to that. We had live at-bats, we did some stuff, and we were as sharp as we could have been. We threw a couple balls away (after) we had spent a lot of time with our pitchers, and we threw one away at first in the first inning, threw another one away in the fourth, and then Joey drove off the ball. I think our offensive struggles were more attributed to their pitching."
Pitcher Bobby Doran
On continuing the trend of being a second-game stopper:
"It was nothing unexpected, so we just stayed in there and did our thing."
On having less strikeouts than his last performance against Missouri:
"I had to average out the strikeouts, you know. I couldn't do it again; it was too many. I didn't have the best stuff, so I had to work around it."
On the team's performance after a 12-day break:
"We're a little rusty. I think we got a little lackadaisical, and it showed the first game. It happens, and we've just got to get back up there."
Pitcher Chad Bettis
On the day being nothing new to the club, lose the first game and win the second one:
"Oh ya, definitely not. We're used to it now, and we need to find a way to come out here and play clean the first game and hopefully put ourselves in good position to win the first game. But we came out here with the same intensity, and we all did our jobs. Bobby (Doran) threw strikes and got a good start, got groundballs, and was really efficient, and I threw strikes and just gave my team a chance to win. It was great to see that everyone came out here and rallied up after that first game."
On whether the team was a little slow following the 12-day break:
"Maybe a little bit. I actually think we might have been a little too amped up. In the locker room, everyone was really ready to go after 11 days and 12 days now after yesterday that we had played a baseball game, so everyone was really ready to go. If anything, we were just too amped up."
Infielder Barrett Barnes
On playing in the lead the second game as opposed to the first one:
"Definitely. Every time you get ahead it gives you a greater opportunity to pull away and execute and win that day. We feel very good with Bobby on the mound, especially when we give him a lead. He can pretty much wrap that up if Bobby gets a four-run lead. That's what we did, and we came away with the W."
Baylor Head Coach Steve Smith
On having two pitching-dominated games in Lubbock:
"Ya, and we're all wearing jackets, and the win is softly blowing out of the north. There was only one home run hit I think, and that kid hit that ball really good. This was a baseball game."
On pitcher Logan Verrett's performance on the mound the first game:
"He's had a lot of people baffled, and he's got good stuff. He just pitched well, and that's what you would really expect and hope to have the first game out of the shoot in this league. Their Friday guy I think pitched the second game, and their guy (Doran) was really good, too."
On how big a difference playing with the lead had on both teams throughout the day:
"It's all about what's on the mound. I thought we didn't execute in some situations in either game. We start off the first game with a runner on second with nobody out and we don't score. We start off the second game with a runner on third with one out and all we have to do is hit the ball to the middle of the field. We hit the ball to the third baseman, and whether that's a good call or bad call it's not the point. You've got to get the ball to the middle of the field. I just thought we did the little things very well, and we're not hitting the ball out of the park. We're having to play close games because of that."
