LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshmen Barrett Barnes and Jamodrick McGruder were named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team as announced by Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday morning.
The duo becomes the first Tech players to earn Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American accolades.
Coming off of a stellar freshman season, Barnes was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year after leading the Red Raiders to a fifth-place finish in conference play. The Sugarland, Texas native was a mainstay in the Red Raider lineup starting in all 57 games. He finished the year with a team-high 14 home runs, including three multi-home run games, a .341 batting average while also plating 53 RBIs for the year.
Fellow freshman, McGruder, joined Barnes on the elite team as he turned in an outstanding rookie campaign, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors for his performance on the field. The Lubbock Coronado graduate started 48 games of the season and stole a team-high 23 bases while coming in second behind Barnes with seven home runs.
Prior to this season, the last Red Raider freshmen All-Americans were in the 2006 season when Miles Morgan, Big 12 Freshman Pitcher of the Year, and Roger Kieschnick, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, were both named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American First Team.
Joining the two Red Raiders, the Big 12 Conference landed four other athletes on the All-American team as Logan Vick (Baylor), Max Muncy (Baylor), Max White (Oklahoma) and Michael Wacha (Texas A&M) were all selected for the honor as well.
