LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech held its first morning workout of training camp and, unlike yesterday, there wasn't a single cloud in the sky.
Temperatures were in the upper 80s to lower 90s for today's practice which makes a big difference this time of year. The coaching staff will alter its originally announced schedule to help combat some of the fatigue that comes with the scorching temperatures this time of year. Fresh legs are important and the Red Raiders will work out again tomorrow morning at 10:45 a.m. (closed to the public).
Britton Barbee UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY
Senior defensive lineman Britton Barbee underwent successful surgery this morning to repair a torn Achilles tendon in his right foot. Barbee suffered the season-ending injury on Sunday afternoon just as the Red Raiders were beginning practice. Barbee played in one game last season and is a native of Abilene, Texas.
EVERYTHING THAT COMES HIS WAY
Alex Torres, Texas Tech's leading receiver last season, is looking even better in his sophomore season. Torres has caught virtually everything that has been thrown his way since training camp started on Saturday. That should come as no surprise to anyone as he hauled in a team-high 67 receptions in 2009. In today's practice, he made a couple of spectacular grabs so let's hope he keeps improving every day.
FOCUS ON THE KICKING GAME
There was immense focus on the kicking game today and it ultimately led to the Red Raiders doing some extra conditioning work. Coach Tuberville forced the kicking unit to sprint from the sideline and get a field goal off in 10 seconds, and after a couple of misses, Matt Williams connected to officially end practice. The first two misses resulted in 20, 20-yard sprints for the entire team. The coaching staff has been preaching mental toughness and stamina to play a four-quarter game - today's exercise will certainly get the Red Raiders moving in the right direction.
