LUBBOCK, Texas - Future Texas Tech baseball player Kelby Tomlinson helped lead the Liberal (Kan.) Bee Jays to the National Baseball Congress World Series championship Friday evening with a 9-6 victory over the Seattle (Wash.) Studs in Wichita, Kan.
Tomlinson, who led all players in the two-week tournament with 12-of-13 stolen bases, will join Texas Tech for his junior season in 2010-2011 after earning honorable mention NJCAA All-America honors this past season at Seward County Community College. Tomlinson was named first team Jayhawk West All-Conference and first team NJCAA All-Region VI.
Tomlinson, a shortstop originally from Elgin, Okla., hit safely in five of the Bee Jays eight games in the tournament, which includes a pair of multi-hit games. He finished the tournament going 2-for-4 in the championship game with a run scored and made a highlight reel play in the field at shortstop.
He was named the Liberal Bee Jays Most Valuable Player, batted .339 (60-for-177) with 42 runs, 12 doubles, four triples, 28 RBI, 26 walks and was caught stealing just once going 36-of-37 on the season. He led the team in five statistical categories.
