LUBBOCK, Texas - The last eight months have consisted of over 50 speeches, appearances all across the state and the meeting of thousands of Texas Tech alumni and fans. Despite a ferocious schedule since his hiring on January 10, today was the day Red Raider fans have been looking forward to all along - the first day of practice.
An estimated 1,200 fans came to Jones AT&T Stadium this afternoon to get the first glimpse of the 2010 Red Raiders as they held their first workout of training camp at 3 p.m. The attendance is easily the largest number of fans to turn out for a training camp practice and shows the enthusiasm that is gripping West Texas over this Texas Tech football program.
"It was a good first practice, said Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville. "There is not a lot you can do when you aren't in shoulder pads but evaluate some of the young guys and put a lot of emphasis on fundamentals. We have a few more days of this before we can move to pads and we will use this time to improve and be ready for the move to pads."
The most notable difference on the field today was that the Red Raiders came out wearing white helmets with no logos or striping. The white helmets are being used to help keep the players cooler during the August heat and to keep game helmets from getting scuffed up prior to the first game against SMU.
"The white helmets make a huge difference," said running back Baron Batch. "It's amazing the difference that it makes when it's as hot as it is today."
Today's practice began promptly at 3 p.m. with a team stretch period and the Red Raiders wrapped up at 5:12 p.m. - following a total of 25 periods. Tech focused heavily on all facets of the game with strong detail given to special teams.
Tomorrow's practice will be the final workout session open to the public and will begin at 3:45 on the field inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Due to painting being done on the east side, fans are asked to enter the stadium through gate one and sit in the west stands. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90's on Sunday so please bring plenty of fluids and sunscreen.
