LUBBOCK, Texas - Cool and wet were the keywords for Texas Tech's third practice of training camp.
Cloudy skies provided a much needed break to practice this afternoon after the Red Raiders spent the first two days in the grueling August heat. Those cloudy skies, however, eventually led to thunderstorms that forced the Red Raiders off the playing field inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Texas Tech head football athletic trainer, who monitors weather conditions during practice, alerted head coach Tommy Tuberville to remove the team from the field at 4:38 p.m. due to the close proximity of lightning.
Texas Tech spent the last 20 minutes of practice inside the athletics training center as heavy rains bore down on campus.
The Red Raiders will continue practice inside Jones AT&T Stadium for the next couple of days due to finishing touches being done on the practice fields.
WHO WILL EARN THE PUNTING JOB
Will it be sophomore Ryan Erxleben who held the job last year or will senior Jonathan LaCour win back his old job? LaCour was forced to sit out last season and is hungry to regain his old position but you can expect Erxleben to battle hard to keep the job. Both players have been impressive so far in training camp and that position will be hotly contested as we move closer to the season opener against SMU.
ANOTHER PEAK JOINS THE SQUAD
Texas Tech football added another "Peak" to the squad today as Nubian Peak, a freshman transfer from Virginia Tech, joined his brother Tahrick. Tahrick, who will be a true freshman, was granted a release from Virginia Tech and began practice over the weekend while his brother Nubian could hit the practice field as soon as Tuesday. Nubian was a receiver at Virginia Tech during his redshirt year but he will be converted to a defensive back here at Texas Tech under coordinator James Willis. Tahrick is eligible to play right away while Nubian must sit out a year due to the NCAA Division I transfer rule.
FORMER RED RAIDERS SHINE IN CANTON
Three former Red Raiders saw playing time last night for the Dallas Cowboys in the 2010 NFL Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. Former Tech defensive ends Brandon Williams and Brandon Sharpe each picked up interceptions in the game to help pace the Cowboys to a 16-7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Sharpe's interception was returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and capped the scoring for the Cowboys on the evening. Both Williams and Sharpe have been converted to linebacker and are trying to earn spots on the roster. Jamar Wall, another former Tech defensive standout, also had a big game as he paced the team with six total tackles and logged five punt returns.
