NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD
A new Jones AT&T Stadium attendance record was established this evening as 60,454 came through the turnstiles for tonight's game against Texas. The previous record was 57,733 set last season in the game against Texas A&M.SMITH'S BIG PLAYS
Junior defensive end Scott Smith, last week's defensive player of the week, put his name in the running for the accolade again. Smith's first big defensive play was a tipped pass on a 3rd and 8 situation late in the first quarter and then hauled in the interception which was his first of the season. He tipped a pass later in the game that led to a Jarvis Phillips interception that was returned for an 87-yard touchdown. Smith finished the night with two sacks, a forced fumble and six total tackles.PHILLIPS PICKS TWO
Redshirt freshman Jarvis Phillips scored the first defensive touchdown of the season when he intercepted Garrett Gilbert with just under two minutes remaining in the first quater. Phllips returned the interception 87 yards for the score and marked Tech's first INT for a touchdown since Daniel Charbonnet did so against Texas here at Jones AT&T Stadium. The interception was his second of the season and marked the first defensive score by the Red Raiders since LaRon Moore returned a 31-yard fumble for a touchdown last year against Kansas. Phillips' second interception of the night came late in the first half with the Longhorns in the red zone and threatening to break a 14-14 tie. The interception was his fourth of the season and he has had at least one INT in each game this season.OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES
The Tech offense struggled to find a rythm throughout the game and were held to 144 total yards. It marks the first time a Texas Tech offense has been held under 150 yards since 1990 as Miami held the Red Raider offense to 93 yards. Tommy Tuberville was present at both games as he served as a defensive assistant for Miami. The offensive woes continued in the running game as Tech was held to -14 yards on the ground. The last time the Red Raiders were held to negative yards rushing was at Texas last season.NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
- Senior nose tackle Colby Whitlock picked up his 39th consecutive start tonight while senior defensive end Brian Duncan made his 37th consecutive start.
- Senior defensive end Brian Duncan picked up the first sack of the game for the Red Raider defense early in the second quarter. It marked his fifth of the season.
- Lyle Leong's sixth touchdown catch of the season tied the game at 14-14 with 11:52 remaining in the first half. Leong hauled in a 15-yard pass deep in the corner of the end zone to help even things up for the Red Raiders. He has now caught a touchdown pass in each of Tech's three games this season.
- Jonathan LaCour notched his third punt of the season inside the 20-yard line (all the way to the 1-yard line) with 6:39 remaining in the first half. It marked the 22nd of his career.
