LUBBOCK, Texas - Lady Raider Kierra Mallard took some time to discuss what she did on her summer vacation. Mallard is a junior forward from Dallas who averaged 11.4 points for the Lady Raiders last season. See what Mallard had to say about improving her skills for the upcoming season, team bonding and how the competition in Canada differed from what the Lady Raiders were used to.
What's your favorite thing about the summer?
My favorite thing about the summer was getting alone time by myself.
Did you take classes in the summer?
Yes, three hours both sessions.
Did you like going to Canada this summer?
Yes, it was very neat. It was new and different. We got to go on our own and did some sightseeing together too. I got to see this actress I knew and got a picture with her. I can't remember her name but she played Tyler Perry's wife in "Why Did I Get Married?"
What was your favorite city in Canada?
Victoria
What skills did you improve on during the summer?
Learning how to be mentally stronger - when I'm tired, how to stay strong and keep going.
Is it easier to balance workouts and school during the summer?
Yes, because I only had one class so I had time after class to do stuff I wanted to do and then go do homework too. We had workouts in the evening or morning. I like working out in the morning because you get it out the way and have the rest of the day to whatever you want.
Did you get to spend any time at home this summer?
No, not really. I did go home for a week or so after we got back from Canada. It was good to spend time with my family because now that school has started, I won't get to go home much.
Did anything about the competition in Canada surprise you?
Yes the first game was neat. It was a good experience because you get to play different people, and how their style was different, they were more physical and the lanes were wider so you would have to figure out how to do your moves without traveling because they were so big.
What's your favorite thing to do in Lubbock during the summer?
Go to pool parties or hang out at home.
What else do you do during the summer besides class and workouts?
Just relax and hang with friends.
Did you like going to Main Event with the team?
Oh yeah, because usually when we try to set up something with the team not everybody comes but this time everybody came so it was really cool.
What was your favorite thing to do at Main Event?
My favorite thing to do was laser tag.
