Lady Raiders Claw Back to Beat Tigers

LUBBOCK, Texas - What seemed like déjà vu for some, the Texas Tech women's basketball team had to erase a double-digit deficit to come back and win for the second-straight game as it defeated Missouri, 63-56, Wednesday evening at the United Spirit Arena.
Missouri (9-7/1-1 Big 12) controlled the first half of the game as it went on an 11-2 run the first four minutes. Tech (15-1/2-0 Big 12) scored just four points the first five minutes.
The Lady Raiders knotted the game at 13-13 as Chynna Brown nailed a three-pointer with 10:37 to go, but the Tigers scored the next four points to go back up by four with 9:02 left.
Mizzou got its first double-digit lead of the half at 32-22 with 2:20 to play on a three-pointer by Jasmyn Otote.
The Tigers biggest lead of the first period was 12 points as Shakara Jones made a layup at the buzzer to give Mizzou a 38-26 advantage at the break.
In the second half, the Tigers scored the first bucket of the half to get its largest lead of the contest of 14 points at, 40-26, on a jumper by Jones. Mizzou continued to have a double-digit lead through the first seven minutes until Jordan Barncastle sank a three-pointer to put the score at 43-35. The Tigers had two more double-digit leads with the last coming at 9:42 on a pair of free throws by Christine Flores to go up 47-37.
Over the next six minutes the Lady Raiders chiseled the lead down and took their first lead of the game at 51-50 on a jumper by Kierra Mallard with 3:14 to play. It was a lead they would never relinquish. Tech's largest advantage was eight points when Brown made two free throws with 13 seconds to go to put Tech up 61-53.
Brown was successful on all six free throw attempts the final 33 seconds as the Lady Raiders made all 10 attempts from the charity stripe in the final 50 seconds of the game.
Tech went on a 21-6 run the last eight minutes of the contest. Brown led Tech with a career-high 22 points and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line, while Smalls chipped in 10 points. Wickett had nine rebounds and a career-high six steals.
Jones and Otote both had 12 points to lead the Tigers.
The Lady Raiders only shot 31.7 percent (19-60) from the field and Mizzou hit 36.4 percent (20-55) of its shot attempts. The Tigers outrebounded Tech 43-39.
The win marks the first time the Lady Raiders have started Big 12 play 2-0 under head coach Kristy Curry.
Tech returns to action on Sat., Jan. 15, at it hosts Kansas State at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on the Texas Tech Sports Network.
