Women's Tennis Wins Opening Dual Match

LUBBOCK, TX - The Texas Tech women's tennis (1-0) team won their opening dual match of the season over the Wichita State Shockers (0-2) 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, NM.
Texas Tech started their opening match by winning the doubles point over Wichita State. At No. 1 doubles, Kelsy Garland and Samantha Adams defeated Raphaela Zotter and Veronika Blaskova, 8-2. Nikki Sanders and Caroline Starck secured the doubles point with their 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Montse Blasco-Fernandez and Delia Damaschin. The No.3 Shockers duo of Lutfiana Budiharto and Carla Venticinque stopped Haley Fournier and Elizabeth Ullathorne, 8-5.
In singles play, Texas Tech and Wichita State each won three matches. WSU's Lutfiana Budiharto stopped Elizabeth Ullathorne, 6-0, 6-3. The Shockers won at the third position with Delia Damaschin's 6-4, 6-3 win over Caroline Starck. WSU also won at the No. 4 spot with Veronika Blaskova's three-set win over Haley Fournier, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Texas Tech bounced back with senior Kelsy Garland's win at No. 5 singles over Carla Venticinque, 6-0, 6-3. Sophomore Sandra Dynka won her match over Montse Blasco-Fernandez at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman Samantha Adams secured the match for Texas Tech with her win at No. 2 singles over Raphaela Zotter in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
"We are extremely excited to win a close match against a tough Wichita State team, stated Texas Tech head coach Todd Petty. "The Shockers have been to the NCAA Tournament four times and have won their conference championships four times since 2006. I really respect their coach, Colin foster, and the successful program he has built. This is a very positive start to the season for us."
In the other match at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex, the University of New Mexico women's tennis team defeated UTEP, 6-1.
Texas Tech plays New Mexico in the championship match Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
