LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech held its annual Major League Baseball Scout Day on Tuesday as approximately 25 MLB area scouts and cross checkers attended the event at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The draft-eligible Red Raiders showcased their skills while the team took infield/outfield, batting practice and competed in a seven-inning scrimmage.
The Texas Tech players were evaluated by scouts who were equipped with rosters, clipboards, stop watches, video cameras and of course radar guns.
The current Red Raiders roster has six players who have been drafted during their careers, including left-handed pitcher Daniel Coulombe (2008 - 17th round, Los Angeles Dodgers), outfielder/left-handed pitcher Andre Wheeler (2010 - 22nd round, Los Angeles Dodgers), infielder Stephen Hagen (2009 - 42nd round, Seattle Mariners; 2007 - 50th round, Oakland Athletics), left-handed pitcher Rusty Shellhorn (2008 - 39th round, Chicago White Sox), third baseman Reid Redman (2011 - 37th round, Los Angeles Dodgers) and shortstop Matt Eureste (2011 - 40th round, Cleveland Indians).
Texas Tech had five players selected in the 2011 MLB Draft as either draft selections or as a free agent. The Dan Spencer era at Texas Tech has produced 19 MLB draft picks/free agents, while a total of 105 Red Raiders have been drafted since 1969.
