Red Raider Profile: Blake Bass
The Texas Tech baseball team's fall season is underway and throughout the remainder of the semester, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Blake Bass (INF - 6-6, 235 - R/R - Fr./HS - Lubbock, Texas/Coronado)
The new year is here and in walks Blake Bass. For those who don't know him they might think he is in the wrong building. Bass, who stands at 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, has a presence that would resemble a tight end for the Red Raider football program.
No question the largest Texas Tech player, Bass is the second youngest Red Raider wearing the red and black for baseball program as he turned 18 on June 3. The only player younger is fellow freshman Matt Eureste, who turned 18 on July 29.
There is no need to confuse Bass with any of the football players on campus. He belongs with the baseball team. And his prep statistics and honors prove it.
A local product, Bass helped guide Lubbock Coronado to the state championship finals and to a 33-16 overall record in 2011. Bass was a first team all-state pick after batting .390 with 22 doubles, six home runs, 67 RBI and a .675 slugging percentage.
Bass also excelled in his first season on varsity in 2010 while batting .409 with 21 doubles, 10 home runs and 53 RBI. He was named the 2010 2-5A All-District Player of the Year.
"I think that Blake Bass is going to be a premier power guy in this program before it is all said and done," fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "We really like him. We think he is going to be a very good Red Raider. We are going to try and find at-bats for him during the spring, and he will get as many as he earns. We are very excited to have him in our program."
In addition, Bass played his first season on the varsity at Lubbock Coronado High School under Texas Tech director of baseball operations Jimmy Webster. During that season, Webster's last at the school, Coronado won the District 2-5A championship and advanced to the regional semifinals for the first time since 1995.
