FLORA MAKING QUICK CHANGES TO TEXAS TECH
Prior to his arrival, Texas Tech had only 11 wins over its last three seasons. Don Flora surpassed that total in mid-September. Now, the first-year head coach is aiming to put Tech in the midst of the Big 12 race as the Red Raiders have only won three conference matches during the past three years. After opening the conference schedule with back-to-back matches against ranked opponents, the Red Raiders are in the midst of playing four of their next six matches on the road with home matches against Kansas State and Texas A&M during that span.
THE SERIES
Tech is only 8-26 all-time against Kansas State with losses in each of its last 12 matches against the Wildcats. The Red Raiders have not defeated the Wildcats since Nov. 20, 2004 when Tech took a five-set match in Manhattan. Tech has not defeated Kansas State in Lubbock since the 2001 season when the Red Raiders claimed a 3-1 victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Red Raiders return to the road for two matches next week, traveling to the state capital on Wednesday night to face 10th-ranked Texas and then to Missouri on Saturday. Tech's next home match is Oct. 19 when the Texas A&M Aggies come to Lubbock.
RED RAIDERS SELECTED FOR TWO LOCAL TELEVISION APPEARANCES
Two of Tech's remaining home matches will be broadcast locally by Ramar Communications. The Red Raiders' matches against Texas A&M (Oct. 19) and Texas (Nov. 9) will be aired on Fox News Now, which is channel No. 9 on Suddenlink in the Lubbock area.
TECH FACES TOUGH START TO BIG 12 PLAY
The Red Raiders had a rough start to Big 12 play over the last week as Tech fell to 16th-ranked Iowa State on Sept. 24 and then No. 25 Oklahoma last Saturday. Tech was a point away from defeating the Sooners as the Red Raiders failed to convert on two match points, allowing OU to eventually make a comeback and escape with the win. Baylor kept Tech's struggles going Wednesday night, sweeping the Red Raiders in Waco.
DOWDY NOT JUST AN OFFENSIVE PLAYER
If Amanda Dowdy has proved one thing this season, it would be that her impact isn't only felt on the attack. The senior is Tech's leader in both kills and digs and ranks among the Big 12's top performers in both categories. Dowdy has posted a double-double in 15 of Tech's 18 matches thus far, giving her 29 over her career. She enters the Kansas State match having posted a double-double in each of Tech's last 10 matches.
DOWDY NEARING ANOTHER MILESTONE
Amanda Dowdy made another step up the Tech record book against Iowa State as the senior moved to second all-time in career attempts, passing Melissa McGehee (1999-02). Dowdy now has 3,560 swings during her four seasons and trails McGehee by only 54 kills for second all-time in that category as well. Kelly Johnson is the school's all-time leader in both categories as she totaled 1,925 career kills and 5,142 attempts during 2001-04 seasons.
VAUGHAN SNAPS CAREER HIGH
Tory Vaughan snapped her career high in digs for the second time this season against Oklahoma, totaling 26 over five sets. Her previous high had been the 21 digs she notched against Morehead State in the finale of the Texas Tech Invitational. It marked the third time Vaughan had broken the 20-dig barrier this season.
DAVID BOOSTING OFFENSE OVER LAST WEEK
Breeann David has dropped double-digit kills figures in each of Tech's last three matches, including a career-high 17 against Oklahoma last Saturday. The freshman's double-digit streak marks her longest of her career so far. David also recorded her first career double-double against New Mexico, nailing 15 kills to go with her 12 digs.
MEYERS MOVING UP RECORD BOOK TOO
Karlyn Meyers moved into sole possession of seventh on the school's career assists chart midway through the opening set against Oklahoma. Only the eighth player in school history to reach 2,000 assists in a career, Meyers passed Mary Loescher (1985-87) as she now has 2,361 assists over her four seasons.
RED RAIDERS SCORE COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN
Tech's come-from-behind win over New Mexico last week marked the second time this season the Red Raiders had overcome a deficit on the road. After winning the first set, Tech dropped the next two games before rallying to win the final two in the Red Raiders' first five-set match of the year. Tech had previously overcome an early one-set deficit to defeat North Texas on Sept. 19 in Denton.
