LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech claimed its third tournament title of the JoJo Robertson era Wednesday, closing the fall season with a four-stroke victory at the Texas State Challenge held at the Onion Creek Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
Despite an otherwise difficult final round, the 24th-ranked Lady Raiders were able to outlast second-place UTSA and Michigan behind the play of two their seniors, Kim Kaufman and Gabby Dominguez.
Tech finished with a 15-over 295 final round, its highest card of the two-day event, moving the Lady Raiders to 34-over for the tournament and in good enough position for their first tournament title since winning the Baylor Invitational last April.
"It wasn't our prettiest day but our team found a way to win," said Robertson, who became the first Tech head coach in program history to lead the Lady Raiders to a tournament title in three-consecutive seasons. "It's a great feeling to end our fall season this way. This group has worked hard all fall and this is a good win for us."
Like so many times over their career, Tech rallied on the play of Kaufman and Dominguez as the duo combined to shoot 3-over on the day to keep the Lady Raiders in contention.
Dominguez claimed the individual title, her second of her career, thanks to a birdie on the par-5 18th that left her with a 3-over 73 on the day and a stroke up on a three-way finish for second. Her 2-over 212 final card marked the fourth-lowest score in school history and the lowest of her career.
With the win, Dominguez became only the eighth player in school history with multiple victories over a career as she also won the MountainView Collegiate Invitational during her freshman season.
Kaufman, meanwhile, overcame a difficult opening day, where she combined to shoot 12-over, with an even-par score over the final 18 holes. She finished alongside teammate Beverly Mendoza in a tie for 14th place, marking the fifth tournament to finish in the top 20 this season.
"I'm so happy for Gabby," Robertson said. "She really showed how tough she is to hang in there and birdie her final hole for the win. Kim also had a solid round for us and really delivered the low score we needed to finish the tournament off with a win."
Tech's three remaining players - Elin Arvidsson, Deborah DeVilla, and Mendoza - all finished with 6-over cards during the final round.
DeVilla's card moved the junior to 8-over for the tournament and in sole possession of seventh place, her first top 10 finish of the season. Arvidsson wrapped the tournament at 28-over.
Tech's 872 final card marked the fourth-lowest 54-hole card in program history and the third-lowest during Robertson's tenure.
The Lady Raiders will take the winter months off before returning to the links Feb. 12-14 in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
