LUBBOCK, Texas - Kim Kaufman fired a 2-under 70 card to lead Texas Tech to a ninth place finish after the first round of the Notre Dame Clover Cup Friday at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
The junior finished in a four-way tie for sixth, six strokes back of first-day leader Emily Talley of Colorado. It marked Kaufman's third-straight under-par round and puts her in position to continue her season-long streak of finishing inside the top 20.
Even with Kaufman's under-par round, Tech could not crack the top half of the 12-team field as the Lady Raiders recorded an 8-over 296 card. Tech remains in contention, though, as only four strokes separate the Lady Raiders from fourth place and eight strokes from second.
No. 15 Colorado took a commanding first round lead thanks to an 11-under 277 card that was the only under-par score on the day. Host Notre Dame is in second with an even-par 288 while Oklahoma trails a stroke back.
Gabby Dominguez posted Tech's next-lowest card with a 2-over 74 that put her in a tie for 23rd overall. The Lady Raiders' final two scores came from Elin Arvidsson's 3-over and Hannah Arnold's 5-over cards.
Deborah DeVilla completed Tech's lineup with a 9-over first round. Beverly Mendoza, who is playing as an individual, ended the day tied with Dominguez with a 2-over card.
The Lady Raiders tee off the second round at 10 a.m. (CT) Saturday morning. Fans can follow the results live at www.golfstat.com.
